Preserving Black Legacy Fellowship

The Preserving Black Legacy Fellowship is a year-long fellowship that trains an intergenerational cohort of seven Black Detroiters in preservation and storytelling tools and techniques to support their development of a Historypin exhibit that uses oral history and archival research to preserve and share their neighborhood's story. In 2026, it will conclude with a festival dedicated to Black Detroit history, where the fellows will share their projects with the community. Fellows will receive a $2500 participant stipend, $1,500 project stipend, mentorship, and training to support their project development.

Eligibility

This fellowship program is open to all Black Detroit-based individuals who are members of the neighborhood they will be archiving or in which they otherwise have existing relationships.

No formal preservation or storytelling training is necessary, but applicants should have a strong demonstrable interest and commitment to community memory and storytelling.
