Trade School Detroit: Detroit Narrative Mapping

APRIL 3: Detroit Narrative Mapping: Stories We're Tired of Hearing

The Detroit Narrative Agency aims to change the stories that form the future of this city. DNA's Advisory Team is a small group of Detroit artists and community members studying narratives and moving image work to understand principled ways to resource/fund narrative-shifting art projects in Detroit with money and project development support. Applications for these grants will be informed by our communities who are shaping the priority narratives that we will emphasize for these funded projects to work toward shifting. We call the process of identifying these priority stories "Detroit Narrative Mapping." This session is aimed to help us identify the narratives most important to you. We will look at a few pieces of media shaping Detroit narratives and talk about the ways we see truth and myth in those portrayals. The workshop will also include practice on literally flipping the script on the narratives already being told.

Trade School Detroit is a series of workshops that lifts the knowledge that exists in a community and challenges the traditional structure inside classrooms. Everyone in the community is encouraged, regardless of age, to lead a workshop under the idea that if you have practiced or studied a topic for a number of years, even without a certification, your knowledge is valuable and someone else can benefit from it, so it should be shared. The intention of this "school" is to deepen our understanding of energy exchange, through bartering to compensate teachers for their sessions, and to share the extensive knowledge that exists in our communities. No money is exchanged! All compensation is in the form of goods, time or services. Through this, community knowledge is valued and lifted, and ideally, made more accessible.

If you are unable to attend any workshop but have suggestions for future topics or want to lead a workshop, fill out this form http://goo.gl/forms/rwuepnVz5T to help generate ideas.

Our community has knowledge. Let's celebrate it's wisdom through mutual respect & barter. See you at a session!
